Do They Hurt?
So, going back to the first day I put them on, it felt awkward more than anything else. I remember even bragging to my Dentist saying that I must not feel the tightening because of my high tolerance for pain. By mid day I was ready to pull all my teeth out. It was tolerable but it felt like a ton of pressure around my teeth. It makes you SUPER thirsty. When I took them out to have my first meal after having them on, I couldn’t believe how sore my two front teeth were. I was scared to eat again….haha who am I kidding. If there’s a will there’s a way. The only thing that actually really scared me was waking up in the morning to find that there was blood smeared inside the trays. I panicked and emailed my dentist right away. He was very calming and reassured me that it was normal and also could have been my gums. If this happens, make sure you don’t run to google asking for answers. Searching for “teeth bleeding with Invisalign” is not exactly calming to the nerves and can lead you to thinking you have gum disease amongst many other things.
Are they really Invisible?
I would say so. Most people don’t notice until I say something. They notice my lisp more than anything. My words, especially the ones with “s” are slightly off, but I’m getting used to them. Thank God I’m not much of a talker. Also, depending on which teeth your Dentist decides to move, you will have small attachments on your teeth. I have about 5 in front and they are formed of little tooth coloured nodules. They are probably the only ones that make the brace more noticeable.
I’m two weeks into the first tray and I’m actually quite fond of it now. I was a little bit paranoid in the beginning, as I am with everything. Paranoid they would break, melt in hot water, or chip my tooth. I actually emailed my Dentist asking if it was ok to go to a hot yoga class with them on. You know…because they might melt in high temperature. Yep, I’m even annoyed with myself.
Just to sum up some things I’ve learned about Invisalign from my two weeks in.
How long do you have to wear them for?
I am on the Invisalign Express 10. I was told that it would be five months consisting of 10 trays which needs to be switched out every two weeks. My Dentist gave me my first three trays and will be seeing him after finishing up with my third tray. I am recommended to wear them for 22 hours, but I leave them on much longer on a regular day. I’m trying to get the most out of them so I pop it back in as soon as I’m done eating and brushing my teeth. I don’t really get embarrassed taking them out and putting them on in public. I give them all a full disclosure and let them know I am taking out my “teeth” to eat. I have also become comfortable cleaning the aligners and brushing my teeth after a meal in front of random strangers in a public restroom. You get some weird looks, but you just have them in a staring contest if that happens.
How do I take of my aligners?
I was told that I can only clean with lukewarm water and a toothbrush. I’ve googled a few other ways to clean it but regular toothbrush and water does the job for mine. I was given a case to place the aligners when I’m not using them. I also carry around a small tote bag wherever I go that has a toothbrush, a toothpaste and the case as pictured. I make sure I take them with me everywhere, otherwise I don’t eat. And God forbid I starve for a couple of hours.
I would highly recommend Downtown Dental if you are around the Edmonton/Sherwood Park area and interested in the Invisalign. Like I mentioned, I had gotten a few quotes from different places. I went with my gut with this one and I have to say am pretty happy with my decision. My Dentist has helped me feel at ease with the entire process and I can reach him through email and gets back to me promptly any time of the day.
